Insurance Unfair Trade Practices

Iowa has laws that protect consumers against unfair treatment by insurance companies. These unfair trade practice laws provide details on things insurance companies have to do and things they can’t do. The laws also provide information on claims settlement guidelines and standards.

Iowa's unfair trade practice laws cover many different types of insurance. The laws on specific types of insurance, such as car insurance, may provide more protection.

An example of something insurance companies can’t do is unfairly discriminate against you in selling you insurance or in setting your insurance rates. Iowa Code section 507B.4(2)(g); Iowa Administrative Rule 191.15.11.

If you think your insurance provider is violating Iowa law, you can file a complaint with the Iowa Insurance Division. You can only file a complaint with the Insurance Division if your policy was issued in Iowa or is a group policy issued to an employer based in Iowa.

Visit the Insurance Division’s page “How Do I File a Complaint?” for instructions on filing a complaint.
