Overview of Civil Elder Abuse

Iowa law allows an older person or someone who is helping them or concerned about the older person to file a lawsuit in court to stop the abuse. This is a civil law, not a criminal law. This means that there are no criminal penalties, like jail, for the person accused of abuse. This law allows a person who is being abused to ask the court to order certain protections to stop the abuse. See Iowa Code Chapter 235F.
